As our ship approached Anacapa Island off Ventura County, California, we spotted this lone sea lion sunbathing on the rocks. Anacapa Island is one of a group of islands that make up the Channel Islands National Park and that have been called the Galapagos of the United States since the Islands are isolated from the mainland and have species unique to the Islands. Eastern Anacapa is open to hiking but hikers must stay on the trails to protect fragile vegetation and nesting seabirds.
