An extremely rare but relatable moment from a trip to Svalbard was when a mother polar bear sat down right in front of our ship to nurse her cubs. One of them had been crying incessantly for milk, and despite the imperfect location - disadvantageous in that it was in such close proximity to humans - she finally gave into its demand. This photo was captured at 81°34'23" N 26°56'2" E.
From Your Shot photographer Stephanie Thomson: "Chelsea, thank you for explaining what was happening in your image. I've never seen polar bears nurse, and this is certainly a special moment. Great work being prepared! Those cubs look so cozy in the snow, but I can see just how watchful the mother is during this time of vulnerability for her. "
