A free flying Great White pelican lands on Swan Lake, a large body of water located inside the Shanghai Zoological Gardens where there are significant nesting colonies of local herons, egrets, ducks and some introduced species. Great white pelicans breed in certain parts of China that include Tianshan lake in NW Xinjiang, Qinghai Lake, upper Huanghe (yellow river) and stragglers and vagrants are recorded in Henan and Fujian provinces.
