Camel Herder in The Sahara

5 years, 2 months

I met this shepherd on the northern border of the Sahara. A Tunisian friend with whom I was traveling suggested we offer him some of our food. Shepherds, he said, can spend months wandering the desert with their flocks—far from civilization and with nothing but camel’s milk to sustain them. The shepherd gladly accepted oranges and cigarettes from our stash. He chuckled as he quipped, “What’s worse than a cup of camel’s milk?” and then quickly answered his own question: “The second cup!”
