This is just one of the many architectural details to be found in the Myoshin-ji temple complex in Kyoto. I took this photo while staying in the complex, and it is a fascinating place. In the morning, the large bell calls the monks to prayer. Some later rake the gravel that was disturbed the previous day, since people cut through the grounds, mostly by walking or on bikes. In the evening the complex becomes calm and full of the sounds of crickets.
