A humpback whale feeds on anchovies after trapping them near the water's surface as it executes a surface behaviour known as 'lunge feeding'. It will capture up to 1 tonne of food and water in it's mouth during this well rehearsed manoeuvre. The water is then flushed through baleen plates in the animal's top jaw, while the food remains trapped inside.
