On January 1, 2019, I woke before dawn to drive to Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia. It's one of my favorite places to contemplate the nature of change: these trees were once a part of a lush maritime forest, but the natural erosion of the barrier island has stripped it down to this hauntingly beautiful boneyard. We, too, are impermanent: our hopes and anxieties, our affections and griefs, our very breath. The changing of the calendar year is a perfect time to remember this.
